M&M's are multi-colored button-shaped candies, each of which has a hard candy shell surrounding a filling. The original filling was milk chocolate; other varieties have been introduced over the years, such as peanut, dark chocolate, crispy, pretzel, and caramel. The candy shells are typically imprinted with the letter "m" in white on one side. M&M's were created in the United States in 1941. Forrest Mars, Sr., of the Mars Company, and Bruce Murrie, son of Hershey Chocolate's president William Murrie, struck a deal to create the candy. The idea for M&M's was inspired by a candy that Mars observed soldiers eating during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), which had a chocolate center covered in a hard sugar shell that prevented the candies from melting in warm climates. M&M's are commonly eaten as a snack. They are also used as a decorative element in baking, such as in cookies, cupcakes, and other desserts. Their bright colors make them popular for decorating and adding visual appeal.
