How to check a product or outlet

Verify Halal Status on halal.gov.my

Choose a category (Produk Makanan / Minuman for packaged food and drink, Premis Makanan for restaurants, Rumah Sembelihan for slaughterhouses), then search by name.

  1. Write down the product name, the company on the pack and whether it is a product, a restaurant or a slaughterhouse.
  2. On halal.gov.my, pick the matching category and search the name.
  3. Check that the company and product in the result match what you are holding.
  4. For an imported product with a foreign logo, check that the foreign certifier is on JAKIM's current recognised list.

What it certifies

  • Packaged food and drink
  • Food premises such as restaurants and hotels
  • Slaughterhouses
  • Cosmetics and personal care
  • Pharmaceuticals and medical devices
  • Consumer goods, contract manufacturing and logistics

Legal basis and certificate term

The list of recognised foreign certifiers is gazetted under Malaysia's Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011.

JAKIM's certification page says the certification fee covers two years, and each renewal needs a new application and payment.

Worth knowing

  • State Islamic councils and departments also take part in Malaysian certification: JAKIM's fee page tells applicants to pay JAKIM or the relevant state council or department.
  • On 13 March 2025 JAKIM announced it was withdrawing recognition from foreign certification bodies in France, Croatia and China. Use the current list, not an old copy.
