Frequently asked questions

Is Portuguese food Halal?
The seafood and pastry side is largely fine; the pork runs deep. Pastéis de nata are Halal. Bacalhau and caldo verde are Halal if verified, and in both cases the thing to verify is what was added rather than the base. Francesinha is Haram — it is built on ham and sausage.
Is francesinha Halal?
No. The francesinha is a Porto sandwich assembled from ham, linguiça or chipolata sausage and steak, covered in melted cheese and a sauce that is usually made with beer. The pork is the settled part; even a version built only from the beef would still need the sauce checked.
Is bacalhau Halal?
Halal if verified. Salt cod is fish, and fish with scales is permissible across the schools, so the cod itself is not the question. What goes in with it usually is: many bacalhau dishes are finished with chouriço, presunto or a splash of wine, and some restaurant versions use a cured-pork fat to start the pan.
Is caldo verde Halal?
Halal if verified. The base — potato, collard greens, onion, olive oil — is plant food throughout. The traditional garnish is a slice or two of chouriço, which is a pork sausage, so ask for it without, or ask whether the broth itself was started with the sausage.
Are pastéis de nata Halal?
Yes. The custard tart is flour, butter, sugar, milk, egg yolk and cinnamon in laminated pastry — no gelatin, no alcohol, no animal input beyond dairy and egg. A factory-made version can carry an emulsifier, which is the only label line worth a glance.
