Why this ruling

Aptamil is Nutricia's range of infant, follow-on and toddler milks, with some baby cereals, sold in the UK. Unusually for a big brand, Aptamil publishes its own answer on Halal, product by product.

What Aptamil says

Aptamil's UK site says: "Yes, most Aptamil products are halal certified but there are a few that aren't." It then lists them.[1] UK bottles point to that page: the back of a 200 ml First Infant Milk says "For information on halal please visit our website."[2]

Why some are not certified

Aptamil explains that a product is certified only when its raw materials are Halal and its factory has been audited and approved by an Islamic Halal body. Some of its factories have not yet been audited, so their products are not certified, although Aptamil says most of its recipes contain no haram ingredients or processing steps.[1]

The recipe itself is mostly milk, lactose, whey, plant oils, fish oil, vitamins and minerals, with mono- and diglycerides as an emulsifier.[2] For a certified product, that emulsifier is covered by the certificate; for an uncertified one, its source is the open point, as on our E471 page.

Where you'll find it

Frequently asked questions

Is Aptamil Halal?
Most UK Aptamil milks are Halal certified, according to Aptamil, including First Infant Milk and Follow On Milk in liquid and powder. A few are not, such as the toddler ready-to-feed bottles and the Organic 800 g powders.
Is Aptamil ready-made milk Halal?
Aptamil (1) First Infant Milk and (2) Follow On Milk ready-to-feed bottles (70 ml, 200 ml and 1 L) are on Aptamil's Halal-certified list. The (3) and (4) toddler milks in 200 ml and 1 L bottles are not.
Is Aptamil Organic Halal?
Partly. The Organic First Infant Milk liquids (70 ml and 200 ml) are certified; the Organic First Infant, Follow On and Toddler 800 g powders are not.
Why aren't all Aptamil milks Halal certified?
Aptamil says certification needs Halal raw materials and a factory audited by an Islamic body. Some of its factories have not been audited yet, so their products are not certified, even though most of the recipes contain no haram ingredients.

Scholarly view

Infant milk is made from cow's milk, whey, plant oils, vitamins and minerals, with fish oil for DHA, so the Halal question is less about the recipe than about certification. Aptamil's own explanation is that a product is certified only when its raw materials are Halal and its factory has been audited by an Islamic authority; several uncertified lines, it says, contain no haram ingredients but come from factories not yet audited.
