Why this ruling

GDK, short for German Doner Kebab, is a kebab chain with separate websites for the UK, Ireland, the US and other countries. Its website does not answer the Halal question in words; instead each country site links a certificate file from its footer.

The UK certificates

The UK file, titled "Updated Halal Certificates July 2026", holds three certificates.[1] The main one is from IFC Global and covers "Chicken Kebab, Beef Kebab, Doner Kebab" under the OIC/SMIIC 1:2019 standard; it was issued on 22 August 2025, lists a "date of validity" of 18 August 2026 and an expiry of 18 August 2028.

The second is a Halal Monitoring Board (UK) certificate whose renewal date is 19 June 2027. The third, from Halal Certification Islamic Centre Aachen, covers chicken kebab made by Düzgün Food GmbH in Germany; it is dated 28 September 2023 and valid for three years. On the UK copies, the names of the certified businesses are blacked out.

Ireland and the US

The Irish site links the same IFC certificate number without the blackout: the holder is Provinz Food GmbH, part of the Kaplan Group, in Berlin.[2] The US site links a Global Islamic Research Organization (GIRO) certificate for GDK beef and chicken, "hand slaughtered by Muslim method", which ran from 1 January 2024 to 1 January 2025 and has expired.[3]

What to do at the counter

The certificates cover the kebab meat, not named restaurants, and some of the dates on them have passed. So ask the branch you are in to show its current certificate, and check the certifier and the expiry date. For the dish itself, see Doner kebab.

Where you'll find it

  • Doner kebabs in toasted waffle bread
  • Kebab boxes, wraps and burgers

Scholarly view

A restaurant chain's meat is Halal when it comes from a certified supplier and the branch serves it without mixing in anything that is not. GDK's published certificates cover the kebab meat at the supplier level.

They do not say which branches they apply to, and they say nothing about slaughter method beyond the US certificate's 'hand slaughtered by Muslim method', which has expired. A certificate is only as good as its dates, so the branch's current copy is what to rely on.
