Is Laffy Taffy Halal?
It depends on what the label says.
US Laffy Taffy packs list corn syrup, sugar, palm oil and, in small amounts, mono- and diglycerides, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, malic acid, salt, soy lecithin, flavours and colours.

Why this ruling
Laffy Taffy is an American chewy taffy sweet, sold in bars, minis and bags in flavours such as banana and strawberry. Unlike many chewy sweets, it has no gelatin.
What's in it
A Gone Bananas bag lists corn syrup, sugar, palm oil and, at 2% or less, mono- and diglycerides, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, salt, natural flavours, soy lecithin and Yellow 5.[1] The strawberry and assorted packs follow the same recipe with malic acid and different colours.[2][3] There is no gelatin, meat or alcohol.
The E471 question
Mono- and diglycerides, E471, are emulsifiers made from fats that can be plant or animal, and the label does not say which. The Gone Bananas bag carries the OU kosher symbol,[1] but kosher approval is not a Halal certificate and does not tell you the fat source in Halal terms. So Laffy Taffy is Halal if the E471 is plant-based, which only the maker or a Halal mark can confirm.
For other American sweets, see Starburst, Nerds and Skittles.
Where you'll find it
- Chewy taffy bars and minis
- Banana and strawberry flavours, and assorted packs
- Individually wrapped minis

Scholarly view
A chewy sweet without gelatin avoids the most common problem in American candy. What remains in Laffy Taffy is E471, mono- and diglycerides, an emulsifier made from fats that can be plant or animal. Without a stated source or a Halal mark, its status is not settled; a kosher symbol does not answer the question, because kosher and Halal certification are separate systems.
