Why this ruling

Angus Steakhouse is a group of steakhouses in central London, with restaurants in places such as Leicester Square, Bond Street and Paddington. Its FAQ has a Halal section with a Halal menu and supplier certificates.

The Halal menu and certificates

Angus Steakhouse says it offers a Halal menu and links a Halal certificate for each of five items: house and minute steaks, Jacks Creek premium beef, chicken schnitzel, grilled chicken and fried chicken tenders.[1] The certificates come from different suppliers and certifiers:

  • House and minute steaks: NZIDT for AFFCO New Zealand's Moerewa plant, valid until 30 April 2025.[2]
  • Jacks Creek: AHDAA for the Northern Co-operative Meat Company in New South Wales, expiry 3 August 2026.[3]
  • Chicken schnitzel: Al-Haq-Halal for Drosed in Poland, issued 6 November 2024 and valid for one year.[4]
  • Grilled chicken: Halal-Europe for Fairfax Meadow in Derby, valid until 30 June 2025.[5]
  • Fried chicken tenders: the Central Islamic Council of Thailand for Chaveevan International Foods, valid until 11 February 2026.[6]

Every one of these has passed the date printed on it, so the restaurant may hold newer ones it has not posted. Ask to see them.

Stunning

For beef, Angus says "a prayer is invoked, followed by captive bolt stunning".[1] If you accept stunned Halal meat, that is not a barrier; if you only eat meat from unstunned animals, it is.

For UK steak chains that say none of their meat is Halal, see Miller & Carter and Flat Iron.

Scholarly view

A Halal menu backed by supplier certificates is a good sign, but a certificate only covers the period printed on it. All of Angus Steakhouse's linked certificates have passed those dates, so the current position has to be confirmed with the restaurant.

Its beef also comes from cattle stunned with a captive bolt before slaughter; some Muslims accept stunned meat and others do not.
