Is Mr Kipling Halal?
It depends on what the label says.
Mr Kipling, the UK cake brand, makes no Halal claim, but its FAQ lists the products it says are suitable for a vegetarian diet, among them Lemon, Chocolate, Victoria, Almond, Country and Bakewell slices, several pies and tarts, the Manor House cake and the Delicious & Light Angel Cake Slices with Raspberries.
How to verify
- Check the product against Mr Kipling's vegetarian list.
- Read the colours: classic Angel Slices list carmine.
- The Delicious & Light Angel Cake Slices with Raspberries use beetroot and are on the vegetarian list.
- A vegetarian product can still contain alcohol, so read the ingredients for it.
Quick checks

Why this ruling
Mr Kipling is a UK cake brand: slices, pies, tarts and puddings. It makes no Halal claim, but it does say which of its cakes are vegetarian.
The vegetarian list
Mr Kipling's FAQ lists the products it says are suitable for a vegetarian diet: Lemon, Chocolate, Victoria, Almond, Country and Bakewell slices, Jam Tarts, Bramley Apple pies, the Manor House cake, Treacle Tart, sponge puddings and others, with the advice to "always check the label".[1] A vegetarian cake has no gelatine or other animal ingredient, which settles most Halal questions about a cake. It is still not a Halal certificate, and it does not rule out alcohol, so read the ingredients.
Angel Slices
The classic Angel Slices are not on the list. Mr Kipling's own ingredient list for them includes carmine among the colours, alongside mono- and diglycerides and other emulsifiers.[2] Carmine is a red colour made from insects, and scholars differ on it: IslamWeb treats it as impermissible on the majority view that insects are not eaten,[4] while Indonesia's MUI permits cochineal colouring[6] and Jordan's Iftaa Department permits E120 on the ground of transformation.[5]
If you avoid carmine, the Delicious & Light Angel Cake Slices with Raspberries are coloured with beetroot instead and are marked suitable for vegetarians.[3] For another UK cake question, see Jaffa Cakes.

Scholarly view
A vegetarian product has no meat, gelatine or other animal ingredient, which removes the main Halal questions for a cake, but it is not a Halal certificate and does not rule out alcohol. Carmine is the one ingredient that divides scholars here: IslamWeb treats it as impermissible on the majority view that insects are not eaten, while Indonesia's MUI and Jordan's Iftaa Department permit it.
