Optimum Nutrition's help centre answers the Halal question directly: 'Our Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey is not Halal-certified.' The UK and US Double Rich Chocolate labels list a whey protein blend, cocoa, soy or sunflower lecithin, flavourings and sweeteners, with no gelatin, and the help centre says that flavour is formulated to be alcohol free.

Next step Optimum Nutrition says Gold Standard 100% Whey is not Halal-certified. If you need certified whey, choose a product that carries a Halal mark; if you rely on the ingredient list, ask Optimum Nutrition which enzyme the whey was made with and where the flavourings come from. How to verify

How to verify

  1. Read the tub for a Halal mark; Optimum Nutrition says Gold Standard 100% Whey has none.
  2. Read the ingredients for gelatin or other animal ingredients.
  3. Ask Optimum Nutrition which enzyme the whey was made with and where the flavourings come from.
  4. If you only eat certified whey, choose a product with a Halal mark instead.

Why this ruling

Optimum Nutrition is a sports nutrition brand best known for Gold Standard 100% Whey, one of the most widely sold protein powders.

What Optimum Nutrition says

Its help centre answers the question in one line: "Our Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey is not Halal-certified." The same answer adds that the Double Rich Chocolate flavour "is specially formulated to be alcohol free".[1]

What the label shows

The UK Double Rich Chocolate tub lists a whey protein blend (isolate, concentrate and hydrolysed isolate, with soy lecithin), fat-reduced cocoa, flavourings, xanthan gum and the sweeteners sucralose and acesulfame K.[2] The US tub is much the same, with sunflower or soy lecithin and natural and artificial flavour.[3] Neither lists gelatin.

The open question: the whey

Whey is left over from cheese-making. A Hanafi answer from the Council of Ulama Eastern Cape puts it under the same rule as the rennet that made the cheese.[4] Optimum Nutrition's label does not say which enzyme was used, and neither does it give the source of the flavourings. That is why this page says Halal if verified: ask Optimum Nutrition, or choose a whey that carries a Halal mark. Myprotein lists Halal-certified flavours in the UK, and Whey powder covers the rennet question in full.

Where you'll find it

  • Whey protein shakes after training
  • Protein added to oats, smoothies and baking

Frequently asked questions

Is Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey Halal?
It is not Halal-certified: Optimum Nutrition's help centre says so directly. The label lists no gelatin, but it does not say which enzyme the whey was made with or where the flavourings come from, so it is Halal if verified.
Does Gold Standard Whey contain alcohol?
Optimum Nutrition's help centre says the Double Rich Chocolate flavour is specially formulated to be alcohol free. For other flavours, ask Optimum Nutrition.
Is there gelatin in Optimum Nutrition whey?
Not on the UK or US Double Rich Chocolate labels: they list a whey protein blend, cocoa, lecithin, flavourings and sweeteners.

Scholarly view

A Hanafi answer from the Council of Ulama Eastern Cape puts whey under the same rule as the rennet used to make the cheese it came from. A Halal certificate answers that question for the products it covers; without one, it is left to the buyer.
