Is Pizza Express Halal?
It depends on what the label says.
Pizza Express's help centre says: 'Some of the chicken used by PizzaExpress is sourced from suppliers that use halal slaughter methods.' It also says the restaurants are not Halal-certified, the kitchens do not follow Halal preparation standards, they handle pork and alcohol, and Pizza Express cannot guarantee that any menu item is Halal.
How to verify
- Ask a team member whether the chicken in your dish is from a Halal-slaughter supplier; Pizza Express says staff can find this out.
- Remember the kitchen also handles pork and alcohol, and Pizza Express does not guarantee any dish is Halal.
- If stunning matters to you, ask about that too: the help centre doesn't say.
Quick checks
- Some chicken from Halal-slaughter suppliers.
- Not Halal-certified; pork and alcohol in the kitchen.
- Ask staff about the specific dish.
What decides the answer
-
Some chicken
from suppliers that use Halal slaughter, per Pizza Express; ask about the dish -
Other meats
no Halal claim -
Restaurants
not Halal-certified; kitchens handle pork and alcohol
Why this ruling
Pizza Express (written PizzaExpress) is a UK pizza restaurant chain. Its help centre answers the Halal question directly, and the answer has two halves.
Some of the chicken
Pizza Express says: "Some of the chicken used by PizzaExpress is sourced from suppliers that use halal slaughter methods." For a specific dish, it asks you to speak to a team member, who can find out.[1] So the chicken on your pizza may be from Halal slaughter, but you have to ask.
Not a Halal restaurant
The same answer is just as plain about the kitchen: Pizza Express "is not a halal-certified restaurant", its kitchens "do not operate to halal-specific preparation standards", and its restaurants "handle ingredients such as pork and alcohol". It concludes that it "cannot guarantee that any menu item is halal".[1]
The older "all Halal" statement
In 2014 Pizza Express said it served Halal chicken in all its UK restaurants and that the birds were stunned before slaughter.[2] Its current answer says "some", and doesn't mention stunning. Go by the current answer, and ask about stunning if your standard rejects it; stunning explains why that matters.

Where you'll find it
- Sit-down pizza restaurants across the UK
- Chicken pizzas, pasta and dough balls
- Supermarket pizzas and dough balls sold under the PizzaExpress name

Scholarly view
Halal-slaughtered chicken settles the main question for the chicken itself, but Pizza Express is careful to say only 'some' of it is, and that it cannot guarantee any dish. The kitchen also handles pork and alcohol.
Muslims who accept Halal meat cooked in a mixed kitchen can ask about a specific chicken dish; those who want a Halal restaurant will not find one at Pizza Express, by its own account.
