Why this ruling
Papa John's runs pizza delivery stores across the UK through Papa John's (GB) Ltd. Its answer on Halal has changed over the years, so the date of each statement matters.
What Papa John's UK says now
Its animal welfare report of September 2023 says: "We do not promote our products as suitable for Halal or Kosher." It goes on: its meat comes from sites that stun animals before slaughter, and its chicken "may be sourced from Halal approved sites, but they still require that the birds are stunned prior to slaughter."[1]
A month earlier, the Papa Johns UK account on X told a customer: "Our products have never been halal, and we apologise if you've seen this stated elsewhere, it may have been a Papa John's account from outside the UK."[2]
What it said before
The same UK account said in March 2015 that two items were "classed as Halal", the chargrilled chicken topping and the chicken poppers,[4] and in July 2021 that "the only items which are Halal are our chicken toppings & chicken poppers".[3] Those posts are why many sites still call the chicken Halal. The 2023 statements replace them.
How the chicken is slaughtered
The welfare report says all its meat comes from sites that stun before slaughter. Its European chicken is stunned in a controlled atmosphere and its Thai chicken in an electric water bath.[1] Halal certifiers differ on stunning: some accept a stun the bird survives, others, such as HMC, accept none. The kitchen
Papa John's makes no Halal claim for its other meats, and its welfare report covers pigs in its supply chain. All toppings share one make-line and oven.
So, is Papa John's Halal?
Not by Papa John's UK's own latest account. Some of its chicken may come from Halal-approved sites, but nothing is sold as Halal, the birds are stunned, and the kitchen also handles pork. Go by the latest statement. Even chicken from a Halal-approved site is stunned under the report's rules, which some certifiers reject, and it is cooked beside pork toppings.
