Tesco's October 2025 policy says all own-label Halal products must be stunned before slaughter, its branded Halal lines include both stunned and unstunned meat, and every Halal product must be certified by an authority Tesco recognises, such as the Halal Food Authority, and clearly labelled.

Next step Supermarket meat is Halal only when the pack carries a Halal label from a certifier. Tesco labels its Halal lines and requires them to be certified, for example by HFA; Aldi has said it sells no certified Halal meat apart from a trial in a few stores. Unlabelled meat makes no Halal claim. How to verify
Scan a label

How to verify

  1. Look for a Halal label naming the certifier on the pack.
  2. Tesco: own-label Halal is stunned; branded Halal lines include unstunned meat; check the label if stunning matters to you.
  3. Aldi: no certified Halal meat outside a trial in select stores.
  4. Unlabelled supermarket meat makes no Halal claim.

Quick checks

  • Look for a Halal label and certifier.
  • Tesco own-label Halal: stunned.
  • Aldi: Halal only in trial stores.

What decides the answer

  • Pack with a Halal label and named certifier

    Halal to that certifier's standard

Why this ruling

UK supermarkets sell some Halal meat, but they don't all say so in the same way. The short answer is the label: meat is Halal when the pack carries a Halal mark from a certifier, and not otherwise.

Tesco

Tesco published its policy on religious slaughter in October 2025. "All own-label halal products must be stunned before slaughter." Its in-store concessions sell meat from stunned animals only, while its "Branded halal lines" are "both stunned and unstunned". Every Halal product must be "Certified by Tesco recognised authorities (e.g., HFA for Halal)" and "Clearly labelled".[1]

Aldi

Aldi UK posted in 2020 that "We do not sell any certified Halal meat" and that all animals for its own-label meat and poultry "must be pre-stunned prior to slaughter". In February 2026 it said: "We don't sell Halal goods everywhere, just a trial in a few select stores." A July 2026 fact check found Aldi UK hadn't clarified further.[2] So outside those trial stores, Aldi meat isn't Halal-certified.

Other supermarkets

We haven't found a readable Halal policy from Asda, Lidl, Sainsbury's or Waitrose. The same rule applies: look for a Halal label naming the certifier.

Stunning

Certifiers disagree on stunning. HFA accepts stunning that doesn't kill the animal; HMC rejects it. The halal guide explains why, and HMC vs HFA compares the two. For branded supermarket chicken with a published Halal list, see Lilydale in Australia.

Where you'll find it

  • Fresh and frozen meat from UK supermarkets
  • Own-label and branded Halal lines
  • Halal butcher concessions inside stores

Frequently asked questions

Is Tesco meat Halal?
Only the lines labelled Halal. Tesco's policy says its Halal products must be certified by an authority it recognises, such as HFA, and clearly labelled. Own-label Halal is stunned before slaughter; some branded Halal lines are unstunned.
Is Aldi meat Halal?
Generally no. Aldi UK said in 2020 that it sells no certified Halal meat and that all animals for its own-label meat must be pre-stunned. In February 2026 it said it sells Halal goods only in a trial at a few select stores.
Is unlabelled supermarket meat Halal?
It makes no Halal claim. Only a Halal label naming a certifier tells you the meat was slaughtered to a Halal standard.
Do UK supermarkets sell unstunned Halal meat?
Tesco does, in branded Halal lines in selected stores, which its policy says must be clearly labelled. Its own-label Halal and in-store concessions sell stunned meat only.

Scholarly view

A named certifier on the pack is what turns supermarket meat into Halal meat you can rely on. Certifiers differ on stunning: HFA accepts stunning that does not kill, while HMC rejects stunning. Tesco's own-label Halal is stunned and certified by bodies such as HFA; some branded Halal lines it sells are unstunned. Match the label to the standard you follow.
