How to verify
- UK: check your restaurant is one of the nine on Chipotle UK's Halal page (Canary Wharf, the O2, Baker Street, Twickenham, Guildford, Lakeside, Uxbridge, White City Westfield, Westfield Stratford City).
- Only the chicken there is from a Halal-certified source; steak, barbacoa and carnitas are not.
- Decide whether 'halal suitable' is enough for you: the chicken is marinated where non-Halal products may be handled, and the restaurant serves pork and alcohol.
- Outside the UK: we found no Halal statement, so treat the meat as not Halal.
Quick checks
- UK: only nine named restaurants serve chicken from a Halal-certified source.
- Only the chicken; steak, barbacoa and carnitas are not Halal.
- 'Halal suitable' means certified raw chicken, not a certified kitchen.
What decides the answer
-
Chicken at the nine named UK restaurants
from a Halal-certified source; 'halal suitable', not a certified kitchen -
Other UK Chipotle restaurants
no Halal chicken -
US and other countries
no Halal statement found; treat the meat as not Halal -
Steak, barbacoa, carnitas (pork)
not Halal
Why this ruling
Chipotle is the build-your-own burrito chain. It has no Halal certification anywhere we could find. In the UK it does something unusual: it names the restaurants where its chicken comes from a Halal-certified source, and it explains exactly what that does and does not cover.
The nine UK restaurants
Chipotle UK's Halal page lists nine restaurants with what it calls "halal suitable" chicken.[1]
| Restaurant | Area |
|---|---|
| Canary Wharf | London |
| The O2 | London |
| Baker Street | London |
| Twickenham | London |
| White City Westfield | London |
| Westfield Stratford City | London |
| Uxbridge | London |
| Lakeside Shopping Centre | Thurrock, Essex |
| Guildford | Surrey |
Only the chicken counts. Steak, barbacoa and carnitas (pork) are not certified Halal at any of them.[1]
What "halal suitable" means
Chipotle's own explanation: the raw chicken is Halal-certified, but it is marinated in a facility that may handle non-Halal products, and UK restaurants serve pork and alcohol, so cross-contamination cannot be fully ruled out.[1] That is certified meat in an uncertified kitchen. Whether that is enough depends on the standard you follow; for a fully certified alternative in the UK, see the three fully Halal Five Guys stores.
Outside the UK
We found no Halal statement for Chipotle's US restaurants or anywhere else. There, treat the meat as not Halal. For how slaughter decides chicken, see chicken.
Where you'll find it
- Burritos, bowls, tacos and salads built along a counter
- Chicken, steak, barbacoa and carnitas proteins
- Rice, beans, salsas and guacamole

Scholarly view
Chipotle UK's own term, 'halal suitable', is deliberately weaker than 'Halal': the raw chicken comes from a Halal-certified source, but the marinating and the kitchen are not under Halal supervision, and pork and alcohol are on site.
Many Muslims accept certified meat cooked in a mixed kitchen with separate handling; others want the whole kitchen certified. The page gives you Chipotle's facts so you can apply the standard you follow.
