A tin of corned beef holds cooked beef, salt and sodium nitrite, sometimes with sugar.

Next step Corned beef is beef, salt and a preservative, so the slaughter decides it. Buy a tin with a Halal mark from a named certifier, such as the FAMBRAS Halal Brazil mark on Tropical Sun; the Princes, Aldi, Lidl and Asda tins we checked show none. How to verify
Scan a label

How to verify

  1. Read the tin for a Halal logo naming a certifier, such as FAMBRAS Halal Brazil.
  2. No logo means no Halal claim: the Princes, Aldi, Lidl and Asda tins we checked have none.
  3. The ingredients (beef, salt, sodium nitrite, sometimes sugar) need no further check.
  4. Corned beef hash, pies and sandwiches add other ingredients; check those too.

Quick checks

  • Beef, salt, nitrite: slaughter decides.
  • Look for a certifier's Halal logo.
  • Princes, Aldi, Lidl: no Halal label.

What decides the answer

  • Tin with a Halal logo from a named certifier

    Halal to that certifier's standard
  • Tin without a Halal logo (Princes, Aldi, Lidl, Asda as checked)

    no Halal claim
  • Corned beef hash and other dishes

    check the added ingredients too

Why this ruling

Corned beef is beef cured with salt and cooked, sold in tins. Its ingredient list is short, so the Halal question comes down to one thing: how the cattle were slaughtered.

The ingredients are plain

The tins we checked list cooked beef, salt and the preservative sodium nitrite, and Aldi's adds sugar.[2][3][4][5] None of those needs a second look.

The slaughter decides it

The Qur'an forbids dead animals and those "killed by strangling or by a violent blow", "except what you [are able to] slaughter".[1] So beef is Halal only when it comes from an Islamically slaughtered animal, and a tin can only tell you that through a Halal mark.

Which tins carry a Halal mark

Tropical Sun's corned beef carries the FAMBRAS Halal Brazil logo,[6] and Richbeef's carries a Halal mark in English and Arabic.[7] The Princes, Aldi (Bramwells), Lidl (Newgate) and Asda tins record no Halal label.[2][3][4][5] Aldi UK has separately said it sells no certified Halal meat outside a trial in a few stores.[8]

Tins change, so trust the label on the one in your hand. For the wider rule on supermarket meat, see UK supermarket meat.

Where you'll find it

  • Sandwiches and salads
  • Corned beef hash
  • Pies, fritters and rice dishes

Frequently asked questions

Is corned beef Halal?
Only if the beef was slaughtered Islamically. The ingredients are just beef, salt and sodium nitrite, so look for a Halal logo on the tin. Tropical Sun and Richbeef tins carry one; the Princes, Aldi and Lidl tins we checked do not.
Is Princes corned beef Halal?
Its Open Food Facts record lists cooked beef, salt and sodium nitrite and shows no Halal label. Without a Halal mark on the tin, there is no Halal claim.
Is Aldi corned beef Halal?
Aldi's Bramwells corned beef, recorded as from Brazil, lists beef, salt, sugar and sodium nitrite and shows no Halal label. Aldi UK has also said it sells no certified Halal meat outside a trial in a few stores.
Does corned beef contain pork?
The tins we checked list only beef, salt, sodium nitrite and in some cases sugar. The question is the slaughter, not pork.

Scholarly view

Beef is lawful only when the animal is slaughtered Islamically, and corned beef is beef cured with salt, so the slaughter decides it. The ingredients themselves are plain. A Halal logo from a named certifier is the evidence for the slaughter; a tin without one makes no Halal claim.
