Is Spam Halal?
No — this one is Haram.
Hormel lists SPAM Classic as pork with ham, salt, water, modified potato starch, sugar and sodium nitrite, and its FAQ describes the process as pre-grinding the pork and ham before mixing and canning.

Why it is Haram
Pork is forbidden in the Qur'an, and ham is pork, so Spam made from pork with ham is not Halal under any school. The turkey variety removes the pork but not the slaughter question: turkey is Halal only when it was slaughtered Islamically, which a Halal mark confirms.
Where it shows up
- Canned luncheon meat
- Fried slices and sandwiches
- Flavoured varieties such as Teriyaki and Jalapeño
What decides the answer
-
Halal-certified luncheon meat from another brand
Halal to that certifier's standard -
SPAM Classic, Lite and Hot & Spicy (pork with ham)
Haram -
SPAM Oven Roasted Turkey (no pork; slaughter not stated)
not Halal unless certified
Why this ruling
Spam is Hormel's canned cooked meat, sold since 1937 in a classic recipe and many flavoured varieties. The answer is in the first ingredient.
Pork with ham
Hormel lists SPAM Classic as pork with ham, salt, water, modified potato starch, sugar and sodium nitrite.[1] Its FAQ explains that the pork and ham are ground first, then mixed with the other ingredients and canned.[2] SPAM Lite starts with pork with ham too, adding mechanically separated chicken,[3] and so does Hot & Spicy.[4] Pork and ham are not Halal, so neither is Spam.
The turkey version
SPAM Oven Roasted Turkey is the exception: white turkey, turkey broth, salt, starch, sugar, dextrose and sodium nitrite, with no pork.[5] That removes the pork question but not the slaughter question. Like any turkey, it is Halal only if the bird was slaughtered Islamically, and the can carries no Halal mark.
For a canned meat that can be Halal with the right mark, see Corned beef.
How to verify
Check labels carefully for alternate names or derivatives linked to spam, and choose clearly Halal or plant-based alternatives instead.
Quick checks
- Classic and most varieties: pork with ham.
- Oven Roasted Turkey: no pork, slaughter not stated.
- No Halal mark.
