Where you'll find it
- Scotland's orange fizzy drink, in cans and bottles
- Irn-Bru Xtra and Sugar Free, sweetened without sugar
- Irn-Bru 1901, made to an older recipe
Why this ruling
Irn-Bru is A.G. Barr's orange fizzy drink, made in Scotland. It carries no Halal mark, but its ingredients raise no Halal question: there is nothing from an animal and no alcohol.
What is in it
Regular Irn-Bru lists carbonated water, sugar, citric acid, flavourings including caffeine, quinine and ammonium ferric citrate, sweeteners, the preservative E211, and two colours, Sunset Yellow and Ponceau 4R.[1] Irn-Bru Xtra drops the sugar,[3] and Irn-Bru 1901 adds quillaia extract, a foaming agent from tree bark.[2]
The colour with a confusing name
Ponceau 4R is E124. EU law also calls it "cochineal red A", which sounds like the insect colour, but it is a separate, synthetic dye; the insect colour, carmine, is E120.[4] Irn-Bru lists Ponceau 4R, not carmine. See food colouring for which colours need checking.
Caffeine and quinine
Both are plant compounds and Halal. See caffeine.
How to verify
- Read the ingredients: no animal products and no alcohol.
- E124 (Ponceau 4R, also called cochineal red A) is a synthetic dye; carmine is E120.
- Irn-Bru Xtra and Sugar Free swap sugar for sweeteners; Irn-Bru 1901 adds quillaia extract. All are Halal on ingredients.

Scholarly view
A soft drink is Halal unless it contains an intoxicant or an animal-derived ingredient. Irn-Bru lists neither. Its colours are synthetic azo dyes, not carmine (E120, from insects), and quinine and caffeine are plant compounds.
Flavourings in soft drinks can use small amounts of carrier solvents; this site follows the common position that this does not make a drink Haram unless the source shows wine or another intoxicant.
