Why this ruling
A lamington is one of Australia's classic cakes: a square of sponge dipped in thin chocolate icing, then rolled in desiccated coconut. It is named after Lord Lamington, governor of Queensland at the turn of the twentieth century, and it turns up at school fêtes, bakeries and charity "lamington drives" across the country.[3][1]
What is in it
| Part | Made from | Halal? |
|---|---|---|
| Sponge | Flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk, baking powder | Yes |
| Chocolate icing | Icing sugar, cocoa, butter, milk | Yes |
| Coating | Desiccated coconut | Yes |
| Filling, if any | Raspberry or strawberry jam, or cream | Jam yes; cream, check |
There is no meat, gelatin or alcohol in a lamington, so a home-made or bakery lamington is Halal.[2]
Two things to check
- Cream-filled lamingtons. Some are split and filled with whipped cream. Fresh cream is fine, but bakeries and factories sometimes use a stabilised cream or "mock cream" that can contain gelatin. Ask, or read the label.
- Packaged lamingtons. Supermarket versions often list emulsifiers such as E471 in the sponge, and their source is not stated. A vegetarian mark or a Halal certification settles it; see E471.
Its neighbours
The other Australian bake with a story is the ANZAC biscuit, made with oats, golden syrup and coconut. For the cocoa in the icing, see cocoa, and for the rest of Australian food, the Australia guide.
How to verify
- Sponge, chocolate icing and coconut are Halal.
- Packaged lamingtons may contain emulsifiers such as E471; check the source or a vegetarian mark.
- Cream-filled ones may use a stabilised cream; check for gelatin.
Quick checks
- Plain lamingtons are sponge, chocolate icing and coconut: Halal.
- For cream-filled lamingtons, ask whether the cream is stabilised with gelatin.
- For packaged lamingtons, check E471 and flavourings, or look for a Halal mark.
