Why this ruling
McCoy's Thai Sweet Chicken is a flavour of McCoy's ridge-cut potato crisps. The chicken is in the name only.
What the pack lists
The ingredients photographed in July 2022 are potatoes, sunflower oil and a seasoning of sugar, maltodextrin, salt, dried yeast extract, chilli, fennel, aniseed and clove, natural flavourings, onion, garlic, citric acid, parsley, chilli powder, red pepper powder and paprika extract.[1] A 47.5 g grab bag photographed in 2021 had a slightly different seasoning that included soya sauce, made with wheat flour and barley malt extract, and flavourings.[2] Neither lists chicken, other meat, gelatin or alcohol.
What is left to check
Neither pack photo shows a Halal or vegetarian mark, and the label does not say where the natural flavourings come from. That is why this page says Halal if verified rather than Halal: read the pack you buy, and ask the maker if the flavourings matter to you. If your pack lists soya sauce, see Soy sauce; for flavourings in general, see Natural flavours.
For other UK crisps, see Monster Munch and Frazzles.

Scholarly view
A chicken flavour made without chicken raises no slaughter question, and chicken itself is Halal, so the name is not a concern. What is left is the usual question for seasoned snacks: whether the natural flavourings come from an animal or use an alcohol carrier. The label does not say.
