Why this ruling
Monster Munch are Walkers' baked corn snacks shaped like monster claws, sold in flavours such as Pickled Onion and Roast Beef. Neither flavour contains meat.
What's in the bags
The Pickled Onion bag lists maize and rapeseed oil with a seasoning of flavourings, whey permeate from milk, onion powder, sugar, flavour enhancers, salt, potassium chloride, garlic powder, hydrolysed soya protein, citric acid and spices, and is marked "Suitable for Vegetarians".[1] The Roast Beef bag's seasoning is wheat flour, hydrolysed soya protein, whey permeate, flavourings, rusk, sugar, flavour enhancers, onion and garlic powder, salt, caramel colour and spices.[2] There is no beef in it.
What is left to weigh
Without meat, there is no slaughter question. The ingredients some Muslims ask about are the whey permeate, a by-product of cheese-making, and flavourings whose sources are not stated. The vegetarian mark on Pickled Onion rules out anything from a slaughtered animal; check the Roast Beef bag you buy for the same line. Neither bag shows a Halal mark.
For another meat-named UK snack with no meat in it, see Frazzles.
Where you'll find it

Scholarly view
A meat-named flavour made from soya protein, spices and flavourings contains no meat, so the slaughter question does not arise. The Pickled Onion bag's vegetarian mark also rules out anything from a slaughtered animal. What is left is whey permeate, made from the whey left after cheese-making, which some scholars ask about because of rennet, and flavourings whose sources are not given. With no Halal mark, those are for you to weigh.
