Currywurst is Berlin's favourite street food: a fried or grilled sausage, sliced, drowned in a warm curry ketchup and dusted with curry powder, served with chips or a bread roll. Berlin's street-food history credits Herta Heuwer, who in 1949 mixed ketchup, curry powder and other sauces obtained from British soldiers into the first version.[3][1]
The sausage
In Germany the sausage is almost always pork: a pork bratwurst, or a skinless boiled-and-fried pork sausage in the old East Berlin style.[2] A currywurst from an ordinary stall is Haram for that reason. Even a stall's "beef" sausage may be in a pork casing or contain pork fat; see bratwurst.

Turkish and other Muslim-run snack bars in Berlin and across Germany sell Halal beef or chicken currywurst, and Halal sausages for it are sold in supermarkets. Look for helal or halal on the menu or pack, and ask whether pork sausages are cooked on the same grill. At home, sliced Halal beef sausages with curry ketchup give the real thing.
