Is Rowntree's Halal?
It depends on what the label says.
Nestlé, which makes Rowntree's sweets in the UK, answers the gelatine question on its own site: it uses pork gelatine in Randoms, Squidgers and Rowntree's Lollies, and no gelatine in its core range of Jelly Tots, Fruit Pastilles, Fruit Gums and Pick & Mix.
How to verify
- Jelly Tots, Fruit Pastilles, Fruit Gums, Pick & Mix: no gelatine, vegan, per Nestlé.
- Randoms, Squidgers and Rowntree's Lollies: pork gelatine, so not Halal.
- No Rowntree's product is Halal-certified; read the pack, as recipes change.
Quick checks
- Core range: no gelatine.
- Randoms, Squidgers, lollies: pork gelatine.

Why this ruling
Rowntree's is Nestlé's UK sweets brand: Jelly Tots, Fruit Pastilles, Fruit Gums, Pick & Mix, Randoms, Squidgers and ice lollies.
Which sweets have gelatine
Nestlé answers it directly: "We use pork gelatine in Randoms, Squidgers and Rowntree’s Lollies products. We use no gelatine in our core range of Jelly Tots, Fruit Pastilles, Fruit Gums and Pick & Mix." It adds that all the ingredients in that core range are suitable for vegans.[1]
Jelly Tots
Jelly Tots list sugar, glucose syrup, starch, acids, fruit juices, flavourings and plant-based colours. Nestlé notes they are made "on the same production line as our Fruit Pastilles and Fruit Gums", both of which it also says contain no gelatine.[2] For the pastilles themselves, see Fruit Pastilles; for another UK maker with the same split, see Swizzels.

Scholarly view
Pork gelatine is Haram by the Qur'an's prohibition of swine, so Randoms, Squidgers and the lollies are out. A vegan sweet has no gelatine, animal fat or insect colour, which settles the usual Halal questions for sweets, though it is not a Halal certificate.
