Why this ruling

Swizzels is a UK sweet maker: Love Hearts, Parma Violets, Fizzers, Drumstick and Refreshers lollies, and Squashies.

The vegan sweets

Swizzels lists its vegan sweets, among them Love Hearts, Parma Violets, Drumstick lollies and chew bars, Refreshers, Fizzers, Double Lollies, Fruity Pops and Rainbow Drops, and asks you to "always ensure that you read the label".[1] A vegan sweet has no gelatine or other animal ingredient, so these raise no Halal question on their ingredients, though none carries a Halal certificate.

Squashies

Squashies are the exception. Every Squashies product, Drumstick Squashies included, lists gelatine,[3] and the Squashies account has said: "our Squashies contain pork gelatine."[2] The Qur'an forbids the flesh of swine,[4] so Squashies are not Halal. A Drumstick lolly and a Drumstick Squashie are therefore different answers. See Squashies for the full range.

Where you'll find it

Are Drumstick lollies Halal?
Drumstick lollies are on Swizzels' vegan list, with no animal ingredients. Drumstick Squashies are a different product: they list gelatine, which Swizzels has said is pork gelatine.
Are Swizzels sweets Halal?
It depends on the sweet. Love Hearts, Parma Violets, Drumstick lollies, Fizzers and Refreshers are on Swizzels' vegan list; Squashies contain pork gelatine. None is Halal-certified.

Scholarly view

A vegan sweet has no gelatine, no animal fat and no insect colour, which settles the usual Halal questions for sweets, though it is not a Halal certificate. Pork gelatine is Haram by the Qur'an's prohibition of swine, so Squashies are out; the name Drumstick covers both a vegan lolly and a gelatine Squashie, so the product matters.
