How we score High, Medium, and Low

Haribo is a textbook market-split brand.

By country / market

Verdict by market

There is no single worldwide answer for this brand. Pick your country or market to see the regional verdict, evidence, and last-checked date.

Overall page status stays market-dependent—do not treat one country as proof for another.

Last checked

Mainstream UK supermarket Haribo fruit gums (Goldbears, Starmix, Tangfastics, and similar gelatin lines) align with Haribo’s published pork-gelatin allergen mapping for standard products. Dedicated Halal bags (beef gelatin, clearly marked) and veggie/vegan lines are different SKUs—usually found in specialist shops or the Halal shop range, not as the default Tesco/Sainsbury’s bag. Default UK gelatin Haribo → Haram.

Why this ruling

Haribo is one of the clearest Halal brand splits in confectionery: standard Western gelatin bags are typically pork, while Halal-labelled and Turkish lines use beef gelatin under Halal documentation. The cartoon bears on the bag are not the ruling—the country, gelatin species, and Halal print are.

Pork gelatin on standard lines

Haribo’s own allergen and gelatin overview marks gelatin as pork (svin) for mapped standard fruit-gum products.[1] That is manufacturer evidence, not a rumour thread. For UK, US, and ordinary EU supermarket Goldbears/Starmix/Tangfastics built on that system, this site’s market panels use Haram.

Halal-labelled beef gelatin

Haribo’s official shop sells Goldbären Halal with ingredients listing Gelatine (Rind)—beef gelatin—under Halal labelling.[2][3] Those bags are a different SKU from unmarked supermarket bears.

Turkey

Haribo Turkey states production follows Halal standards and publishes Helal certificates (including TSE documentation).[4][5] Turkish product pages can list sığır jelatini (beef gelatin).[6] Export Halal packs still need the mark on the sealed bag you hold.

Veggie / vegan

Plant-gel Haribo removes pork gelatin risk. Still scan colours and flavours; see Gummy Bears and Carmine when red shades appear.

Practical rule

  1. If the bag is ordinary UK/EU/US gelatin Haribo → Haram.
  2. If it is Halal-marked with beef gelatin (or a recognised Halal cert) → Halal for that pack.
  3. If it is veggie/vegan → check colours/flavours, then usually acceptable.
  4. Never let a holiday import from Turkey launder a pork-gelatin multipack at home.

Where you'll find it

  • Goldbears / Goldbären fruit gums
  • Starmix, Tangfastics, Happy Cola, and mixed bags
  • Halal-labelled Haribo lines (beef gelatin)
  • Veggie / vegan Haribo SKUs without animal gelatin

How to verify

1) Check ‘made in’ / country on the bag. 2) Read the gelling agent: gelatine/gelatin without species on standard EU/UK packs is typically pork in Haribo’s own allergen tables—treat those as Haram. 3) Halal-labelled bags should list beef gelatin (or plant gelling agents) and a Halal mark. 4) Veggie/vegan Haribo lines without animal gelatin need a separate colour/flavour check. 5) Do not treat a Turkish Halal bag as proof for a Tesco Starmix.

  • Country + ‘Halal’ print on the bag first.
  • Gelatin species: pork → Haram; beef + Halal mark → Halal; plant gel → check colours.
  • Default Western supermarket Haribo ≠ Turkish Halal Haribo.
  • See also Gummy Bears for generic gelatin rules.

Conditions for Halal

  • Standard UK/EU/US gelatin Haribo with pork gelatin → Haram
  • Halal-marked bags listing beef gelatin (and matching cert) → Halal for that SKU
  • Veggie/vegan (no animal gelatin) → generally Halal if colours/flavours clear
  • Never transfer Turkey/Halal-shop packs onto unmarked supermarket bags

Scholarly differences

Pork gelatin is Haram across the major schools. Halal-certified bovine gelatin can be Halal when slaughter and chain-of-custody meet the certifier’s standard. Undeclared ‘gelatine’ on Western Haribo bags should be read against Haribo’s own pork-gelatin allergen tables for standard lines—not as mysterious plant jelly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Haribo Halal?
Only some packs. Standard UK/EU/US gelatin Haribo uses pork gelatin and is Haram. Halal-labelled lines use beef gelatin (or plant gels) and are Halal for that marked SKU. The brand name alone never decides.
Do Haribo Goldbears contain pork?
Standard Goldbears/Goldbären in many Western markets use pork gelatin per Haribo’s allergen/gelatin tables. Halal Goldbears list beef gelatin and are sold as a separate labelled line.
Is Haribo Halal in Turkey?
Haribo Turkey states production follows Halal standards and publishes Helal certificates. Trust the Turkish Halal-marked bag—not a German supermarket bag with the same cartoon bears.
Are vegan Haribo sweets Halal?
They avoid animal gelatin, which removes the main Haram risk. Still check colours (e.g. carmine) and flavourings; vegan is not automatically Halal-certified.
Can I eat Haribo Starmix from a UK supermarket?
If it is a standard gelatin Starmix aligned with pork-gelatin production, no—treat it as Haram. Look for an explicitly Halal-marked import or a veggie/vegan alternative instead.
