Why this ruling

Trident is a sugar-free chewing gum sold in the US, Europe and elsewhere.

What the packs list

US spearmint lists "Sorbitol, gum base, xylitol, maltitol syrup", flavours, sweeteners, coconut oil and soy lecithin, with no glycerin.[1] US bubblegum adds "glycerin".[2] The French spearmint lists "humectant (E 422)", sunflower lecithin and "glazing agent (E 903)".[3]

The glycerin

Glycerin (E422) can be made from plant oils or animal fat, and the packs don't say which. E903 is carnauba wax, from a palm. For a similar gum, see Extra.

Where you'll find it

Frequently asked questions

Is Trident gum Halal?
It has no gelatin. Flavours without glycerin, such as US spearmint, are Halal by ingredients; flavours with glycerin depend on its source, which the pack does not state.
Does Trident gum have gelatin?
No. None of the records lists gelatin.
Does Trident contain glycerin?
Some flavours do, such as US bubblegum and the French spearmint; US spearmint does not.

Scholarly view

Glycerin follows its fat: from plant oils or Halal-slaughtered animals it is fine, from pork or unslaughtered animals it is not. Where the label lists no glycerin, the question does not arise.
