Extra is Mars Wrigley's sugar-free gum.

Next step UK Extra gum is labelled suitable for vegetarians by Mars Wrigley, which rules out animal glycerol and gelatine. US Extra packs list glycerol without saying where it comes from and carry no vegetarian claim, so the source is the open question there. How to verify
Scan a label

How to verify

  1. UK and Ireland: look for 'Suitable for Vegetarians' on the pack or retailer listing; that rules out animal glycerol.
  2. US: the glycerol source is not on the pack; ask Mars Wrigley or choose a line without glycerol, such as Extra Refreshers.
  3. Trebor Extra Strong is a different product, a mint, and some rolls list beef gelatine.

What decides the answer

  • UK or Irish Extra labelled suitable for vegetarians

    Halal by ingredients: not Halal-certified
  • US Extra listing glycerol with no vegetarian claim

    confirm the glycerol source
  • Extra Refreshers (US) without glycerol in the list

    no glycerol question
  • Trebor Extra Strong (a mint, not Extra gum) listing beef gelatine

depends on the gelatine's slaughter: not Halal unless certified

Why this ruling

Extra is Mars Wrigley's sugar-free chewing gum, sold in pellet packs and bottles in the UK and as sticks and packs in the US. It carries no Halal mark anywhere, so the answer rests on the ingredients, and the UK and US packs say different things about the one ingredient that matters.

The ingredient that matters: glycerol

Chewing gum is mostly sweeteners and gum base. The ingredient that can come from an animal is glycerol (E422), which keeps the gum soft and can be made from vegetable oil or animal fat. See glycerin for the detail.

UK and Ireland

UK Extra lists sweeteners, gum base, glycerol, gum arabic, flavourings, soya lecithin, carnauba wax and BHA, and Mars Wrigley's product information describes it as suitable for vegetarians.[1][2] A vegetarian claim rules out animal glycerol and gelatine, so UK Extra is Halal by ingredients.

United States

US Extra lists glycerol, soy lecithin and natural and artificial flavors, with no vegetarian claim.[3] The glycerol may well be vegetable, but the pack does not say. Extra Refreshers lists no glycerol at all, which removes the question for that line.[4]

Not to be confused with Trebor Extra Strong

Trebor Extra Strong is a mint from a different company. Some rolls list beef gelatine, which is only Halal if it comes from Islamically slaughtered cattle.[5] For other mints, see Tic Tacs.

Where you'll find it

  • Sugar-free chewing gum after meals
  • Pellet packs, bottles and multipacks
  • Extra Refreshers and Extra White variants

Frequently asked questions

Is Extra gum Halal?
In the UK, yes on ingredients: Mars Wrigley labels Extra suitable for vegetarians, which rules out animal glycerol and gelatine. In the US, packs list glycerol without saying where it comes from, so it is Halal if the glycerol is plant-based. No Extra gum has a Halal mark.
Does Extra gum contain gelatine?
No gelatine appears in the UK or US Extra ingredient lists we checked. The UK vegetarian claim confirms it for UK packs.
What is the glycerol in chewing gum?
Glycerol (glycerine, E422) keeps gum soft. It can be made from vegetable oils or animal fat. A vegetarian label means it is from plants; without one, the pack does not tell you.
Is Trebor Extra Strong the same as Extra gum?
No. Trebor Extra Strong is a mint from another company. Some Trebor Extra Strong rolls list beef gelatine, which is only Halal if the cattle were slaughtered Islamically.

Scholarly view

The ingredients that can come from animals in chewing gum are glycerol (E422), which can be made from animal or vegetable fat, gelatine, and sometimes emulsifiers. A vegetarian claim from the manufacturer settles glycerol and gelatine.

Gum base is a blend of polymers and resins that brands do not itemise; the vegetarian claim covers it too. Without that claim, as on US packs, the glycerol is the one ingredient to confirm.
