Mentos are Perfetti Van Melle's chewy mints and fruit sweets, sold in rolls in most countries.

What the packs list now

The UK mint roll lists sugar, glucose syrup, starch, mint flavourings, maltodextrin, cocoa butter, "thickeners (gellan gum, cellulose gum, gum arabic), emulsifier (sucrose esters of fatty acids), glazing agent (carnauba wax)".[4] The US mint roll is similar, with hydrogenated coconut oil and "Mono- and diglycerides, Sucrose esters of fatty acids" as emulsifiers.[5] A roll sold in France and Germany uses the same gums and sucrose esters.[6] None of the three lists gelatin; these records were updated between March and July 2026.

What is left to check

The emulsifiers. Sucrose esters (E473) and mono- and diglycerides (E471) are made from fatty acids that can come from plants or animals, and the packs don't say which. The glaze, carnauba wax, comes from a palm. Coloured fruit and rainbow rolls are worth a look for carmine (E120).

Older stock and other markets
