Chips Ahoy!

Next step US Chips Ahoy! Original and Chewy list no gelatin, lard, whey or alcohol, only plant oils, sugar, flour, chocolate and milk. They are kosher-certified, not Halal-certified, and Mondelez says to check the label in each market, so read the list on any other flavour or country's pack. How to verify

How to verify

  1. Original and Chewy (US): no gelatin, lard, whey or alcohol listed.
  2. Other flavours (Chunky, Rainbow, Fresh Stacks and so on): read the list, as recipes differ.
  3. The OU-D mark is kosher dairy, not Halal.
  4. Outside the US, look for a local Halal mark; Mondelez certifies market by market.

Quick checks

  • Original and Chewy (US): no animal ingredients besides milk.
  • Kosher (OU-D), not Halal-certified.

Why this ruling

Chips Ahoy! are Nabisco's packaged chocolate chip cookies, made by Mondelez in Original, Chewy and other varieties.

What's in the US cookies

The 13 oz Original pack lists enriched flour, semisweet chocolate chips (with nonfat milk and soy lecithin), sugar, soybean or canola oil, palm oil, high fructose corn syrup, leavening, salt, natural and artificial flavour and caramel colour.[1] The Chewy cookies use fudge chips made with palm kernel or palm oil, and add cornstarch and dextrose.[2] Neither has gelatin, lard, whey or alcohol; the only animal ingredient is milk.

Kosher, not Halal

Both packs are marked kosher, and the box carries the OU-D symbol for kosher dairy.[1] That is not a Halal certificate. Mondelez says Halal certification is handled by outside agencies and varies by country, and tells shoppers to check the ingredients and the label for their own market.[3] So the US recipes are Halal on their listed ingredients, but there is no Halal mark to rely on, and other flavours need their own check.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chips Ahoy Halal?
The US Original and Chewy cookies list no gelatin, lard, whey or alcohol, only plant oils, flour, sugar, chocolate and milk. They are kosher-certified rather than Halal-certified, so they are Halal if verified.
Do Chips Ahoy contain pork or gelatin?
Not in the US Original or Chewy recipes. Their fats are soybean or canola oil and palm oil, and neither list includes gelatin.
Does the kosher mark on Chips Ahoy mean Halal?
No. The OU-D mark means kosher dairy. It is not a Halal certificate.

Scholarly view

Flour, sugar, plant oils, chocolate, milk and leavening raise no Halal question, so the US Original and Chewy recipes are Halal on their listed ingredients. What they lack is certification: the kosher mark confirms only kosher rules, which differ from Halal rules, and the 'natural and artificial flavour' line does not name its carrier.

Some Muslims accept a clean ingredient list; those who only eat certified products will need a pack with a Halal mark.
