Why this ruling
The meat pie is a bakery staple of Australia, New Zealand and Britain: a hand-sized pie of minced or diced beef in thick gravy, in shortcrust underneath and puff pastry on top, eaten hot at football grounds, service stations and lunch counters.[1] Beef is permissible meat, but a pie has three separate checks.
1. The meat
Most meat pies are beef. Some mix beef with pork, and some pies are pork outright.[2] The beef must be from Halal slaughter, which an ordinary bakery pie will not be unless it says so.
2. The gravy
The gravy is made from meat stock or a commercial gravy base. It follows the meat. Some British pies add ale or stout to the gravy, as in steak and ale or steak and Guinness pies, which makes them not Halal; see Guinness.
3. The pastry
Pie pastry is often made with lard or beef dripping, especially in traditional recipes. Lard is pork fat; beef dripping needs Halal slaughter. Many commercial pies now use vegetable fat, and the label will say.
