Is Quality Street Halal?
It depends on what the label says.
Quality Street is Nestlé's tin of wrapped chocolates and toffees, sold in the UK and Ireland. Nestlé lists sugar, glucose syrup, sweetened condensed skimmed milk, palm and shea fats, cocoa mass, whole milk powder, cocoa butter, glucose-fructose syrup, coconut, whey powder, butter, hazelnuts, emulsifiers (lecithins, mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids), cocoa powder, butterfat, salt, flavourings and lactic acid. There is no gelatine or alcohol on the list. The open point is E471, which can be made from plant or animal fat; Nestlé's FAQ says only that the range is not vegan because it contains animal-derived ingredients, and the tins we checked carry neither a vegetarian nor a Halal mark.

How to verify
- The list has no gelatine, meat or alcohol.
- Find 'mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids' or E471: its fat source is not stated.
- Whey comes from cheese-making.
- The UK tin carries no Halal or vegetarian mark; a Nestlé statement on the E471 would settle it.
Quick checks
- No gelatine or alcohol listed.
- E471: source not stated.
- No Halal or vegetarian mark.
What decides the answer
-
UK Quality Street (E471, source not stated; no Halal or vegetarian mark)

If you only eat Halal-certified chocolate

Why this ruling
Quality Street is Nestlé's assortment of individually wrapped chocolates and toffees, sold in tins, tubs and boxes in the UK and Ireland. Most of the list is sugar, milk and cocoa; one emulsifier decides the Halal answer.
What's in the tin
Nestlé lists sugar, glucose syrup, sweetened condensed skimmed milk, palm and shea fats, cocoa mass, whole milk powder, cocoa butter, glucose-fructose syrup, coconut, whey powder, butter, hazelnuts, emulsifiers (lecithins and mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids), cocoa powder, butterfat, salt, flavourings and lactic acid.[1] There is no gelatine, no meat and no alcohol on the list.
The E471 question
Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids, E471, are made from fats that can be plant or animal, and the label does not say which. Nestlé's FAQ says Quality Street is not vegan because it contains animal-derived ingredients, but it does not say whether the range is vegetarian, and it says nothing about Halal.[1] The tub panels we checked print the same list, with E471, and show neither a vegetarian nor a Halal mark.[2] Whey is the other ingredient some people weigh, since it comes from cheese-making.
Matchmakers
Quality Street Matchmakers are a different recipe. Cool Mint and Zingy Orange list sugar, cocoa, milk and whey, plant fats, lecithin and natural flavouring, with no E471.[3][4] They carry no Halal mark either.
For a UK chocolate tub with a vegetarian mark, see Celebrations.

Scholarly view
Nothing in Quality Street is from pork or a slaughtered animal by name, and no alcohol is listed. The one ingredient that could be is E471: mono- and diglycerides are made from fats that may be plant or animal, and Nestlé does not say which.
Without a vegetarian or Halal mark the source stays unknown, and a statement from Nestlé or a certified product would settle it.
