Why this ruling
A full English breakfast – a "fry-up" – is Britain's big weekend plate: eggs, bacon, sausages, baked beans, grilled tomato, mushrooms and toast or fried bread, often with black pudding and hash browns. As usually served, it is not Halal as a whole, because three of its staples are pork.[3] Most of the plate, though, is fine, and Halal versions are easy to find.[1]
Item by item
| Item | Usually | Halal? |
|---|---|---|
| Bacon | Pork | No; see bacon |
| Sausages | Pork | No, unless Halal beef or chicken |
| Black pudding | Pig's blood and pork fat | No; see black pudding |
| Eggs | Fried, poached or scrambled | Yes |
| Baked beans | Haricot beans in tomato sauce | Yes, usually; see Heinz |
| Tomato, mushrooms | Grilled or fried | Yes, if cooked separately |
| Toast | Bread and butter | Yes |
| Fried bread, hash browns | Fried in oil, or in bacon fat or lard | Ask |
The shared pan
In a café, the eggs, mushrooms and bread are usually cooked on the same griddle as the bacon and sausages, and fried bread is often fried in their fat. If that matters to you, ask for your food to be cooked separately, or choose poached eggs and toast.
Regional versions
- Full Scottish adds tattie scones, Lorne (square) sausage and sometimes haggis; see haggis.
- Full Irish adds white pudding and soda bread; see white pudding.
- Ulster fry adds soda farls and potato bread fried in the pan; see soda bread.
A Halal full English
Halal cafés across Britain serve the full plate with Halal beef or chicken sausages, beef bacon or turkey rashers, and no black pudding, cooked on a Halal grill. Look for a certificate from a recognised body such as the Halal Monitoring Committee.[2] At home, the same swaps give the whole breakfast. For the other great British plate, see Sunday roast.
