Is Deli meat (sliced cooked meats) Halal?
It depends on where you bought it.
Sliced cooked meats are mostly meat with salt, starch and stabilisers, so the animal and its slaughter decide the answer.

How to verify
- Read the meat: ham and gammon are pork; check salami and other cured slices for pork too.
- For chicken, turkey or beef slices, look for a Halal mark on the pack.
- Supermarket own-label slices we checked (Tesco, Sainsbury's) and Eastman's have none.
- At a deli counter, ask which certifier supplied the meat, and whether the slicer is shared with pork.
Quick checks
- Ham is pork: never Halal.
- Other slices need a Halal mark.
- Tesco, Sainsbury's, Eastman's: no label.
What decides the answer
-
Chicken, turkey or beef slices with a Halal mark
Halal to that certifier's standard -
Slices without a Halal mark (Tesco, Sainsbury's, Eastman's as checked)
no Halal claim -
Deli counter
ask for the certifier and whether the slicer is shared with pork -
Ham, gammon and other pork slices
Haram
Why this ruling
Deli meat, also called cold cuts or sliced cooked meat, is the ham, chicken, turkey and beef sold in thin slices for sandwiches. The slices are mostly meat with salt, starch and stabilisers, so the answer comes down to the animal and how it was slaughtered.
Ham is pork
The Qur'an forbids "the flesh of swine",[1] so ham, gammon and other pork slices are never Halal, whatever else is on the label.
Chicken, turkey and beef need a Halal mark
The same verse forbids animals killed by strangling or a blow, "except what you [are able to] slaughter".[1] So chicken, turkey or beef slices are Halal only from Islamically slaughtered animals, and the pack can show that only with a Halal mark.
The supermarket chicken slices we checked list chicken breast with starch, salt and phosphate stabilisers, and record no Halal label: Tesco's roast chicken slices,[4] Sainsbury's chargrilled chicken breast slices[5] and Eastman's sliced chicken.[6] Tesco's own policy is that its Halal products are certified and "Clearly labelled",[7] so an unlabelled pack makes no Halal claim.
Najma's sliced chicken with herbs[2] and Istanbul's sliced chicken breast[3] carry Halal marks on the front of the pack.
Beef pastrami works the same way. Aldi's and Waitrose's British Pastrami are cured beef brisket with salt, spices and sodium nitrite,[8][9] and neither list says how the cattle were slaughtered, so only a Halal mark makes pastrami Halal.
At the deli counter
A counter has no pack to read, so ask which certifier supplied the meat, and whether the same slicer is used for ham. For cured sausage slices, see salami.
Where you'll find it

Scholarly view
Deli slices are cooked, salted meat, so the usual meat rules apply: pork is forbidden in any form, and chicken, turkey or beef is lawful only when the animal was slaughtered Islamically. The stabilisers and starches in the slices raise no question; the Halal mark on the pack is the evidence for the slaughter.
