How to verify
- Plain flavours such as Vanilla: cream, milk, sugar, egg yolk; check the flavouring.
- Avoid flavours named after a spirit or liqueur, such as Rum Raisin: they contain alcohol.
- Avoid flavours with marshmallow: the brand says it contains gelatine.
- Vanilla extract and flavourings can carry alcohol; see the vanilla extract page for the views.
What decides the answer
-
Plain flavours such as vanilla
Halal by ingredients if the flavouring raises no question: not Halal-certified -
Marshmallow flavours and swirls
avoid: the brand says they contain gelatine -
Flavours with vanilla extract
see the vanilla extract page for the views on alcohol carriers -
Spirit or liqueur flavours (Rum Raisin and similar)
Haram: alcohol is an ingredient
Why this ruling
Häagen-Dazs is a premium ice cream made from cream, milk, sugar and egg yolk, with very few other ingredients. That makes the plain flavours simple to judge. Two groups need avoiding: flavours with alcohol and flavours with marshmallow. No Häagen-Dazs carries a Halal mark.
What the brand says
Häagen-Dazs's own FAQ states that apart from milk, eggs and the gelatine in marshmallows and marshmallow swirls, it uses no animal-derived ingredients. It also states that several flavours contain alcohol, as a flavour or to carry one, at under 0.5% by volume, including its Spirits collection.[1] Rum Raisin lists 3% rum.[2]
Plain flavours
UK Vanilla lists fresh cream, condensed skimmed milk, sugar, water, egg yolk and natural vanilla flavouring.[3] Everything except the flavouring is plainly Halal. Natural vanilla flavourings and extracts can be carried in alcohol, which scholars treat differently; see vanilla extract.

Scholarly view
Cream, milk and egg yolk are Halal, so plain flavours depend only on the flavouring. Two things make a flavour not Halal: real alcohol as an ingredient, as in rum raisin, which is an intoxicant whatever the amount left, and gelatine from an unstated or pig source, which the brand says it uses in marshmallow.
Alcohol used only as a carrier in flavourings is a known difference of opinion; see the vanilla extract page.
