Paneer is a fresh cheese made by curdling hot milk with lemon juice, vinegar or citric acid, so it normally involves no rennet and no animal ingredient beyond milk.

Next step Check the ingredient list says acid (lemon, vinegar or citric acid) rather than rennet. How to verify
Scan a label

How to verify

  1. On packs, check the coagulant: citric acid, lemon juice or vinegar raise no question.
  2. If rennet is listed, it needs the same check as other cheese.
  3. In restaurants, ask about shared tandoors and grills with non-Halal meat.

Quick checks

  • Is it set with acid or with rennet?
  • In a restaurant, is it cooked beside non-Halal meat?
  • For packed paneer, read the label for rennet or additives.

Why this ruling

Paneer is the fresh cheese of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is made by bringing milk to the boil, stirring in lemon juice, vinegar or citric acid until it splits into curds and whey, then draining the curds in a cloth and pressing them into a block.[3] That is the whole recipe. There is no rennet, no culture and no animal ingredient except the milk, so plain paneer is Halal.[1]

Why the rennet question usually does not arise

Most cheeses are set with rennet, an enzyme that can come from an animal's stomach, and that is where cheese rulings get complicated; see cheese. Paneer is set with acid instead. It is also why paneer does not melt: it softens in a hot curry and browns in a pan, but it keeps its shape.

On packaged paneer, look at the ingredients:

  • Milk, citric acid (or lemon juice, or vinegar) → Halal.
  • Microbial or vegetable rennet → Halal.
  • Rennet, not otherwise described → the rennet check on the cheese page applies.

Paneer dishes

  • Palak paneer (with spinach), matar paneer (with peas), shahi paneer and paneer butter masala are cooked in onion, tomato, cream, butter or ghee and spices. None of that raises a question; see ghee.
  • Paneer tikka is marinated in yoghurt and spices and cooked in a tandoor or on a grill. In a restaurant that is not Halal, it may share the oven and skewers with meat. Ask, if that matters to you.
  • Paneer pakora is fried in batter; ask whether the fryer is shared with meat or fish.

Indian vegetarian restaurants avoid the meat question entirely. In a restaurant that serves meat, the paneer itself is still fine.

Paneer and its neighbours

The same acid-set curd, kneaded rather than pressed, is chhena, the base of Bengali sweets such as rasgulla. Grilling cheese from the Eastern Mediterranean is a different case: halloumi is usually set with rennet. For other dishes you will meet next to paneer, see samosa, naan and biryani.

Frequently asked questions

Is paneer Halal?
Plain paneer is normally Halal: it is milk curdled with lemon juice, vinegar or citric acid, with no rennet. Check the label if you buy it packed.
Does paneer contain rennet?
Traditional paneer does not. It is set with acid, which is why it does not melt like rennet cheeses. If a pack lists rennet, the cheese page explains the check.
Is paneer tikka Halal?
The paneer is. Check the marinade, and whether it is grilled in a tandoor or on skewers shared with non-Halal meat.
Can I make paneer at home?
Yes. Bring milk to the boil, stir in lemon juice or vinegar, then strain the curds through muslin and press them.

Scholarly view

Milk curdled with acid is Halal without any difference of opinion. Only a paneer made with animal rennet would bring in the rennet question discussed on the cheese page.
