Why it is Haram

Gelatin made from pork is Haram in all four Sunni schools. A minority of scholars argue that processing transforms it (istihala), but Halal certifiers do not accept that for food gelatine. Just Born names pork as the source of the gelatin in its marshmallow candies, so there is no doubt to resolve.

Where it shows up

  • Easter marshmallow chicks and bunnies
  • Seasonal shapes for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day
  • Chocolate-dipped Peeps and Peepsters

What decides the answer

  • Just Born jelly beans, Mike and Ike, Hot Tamales (no gelatin listed)

  • Peeps marshmallow chicks, bunnies and seasonal shapes

  • Chocolate-dipped Peeps and Peepsters (same marshmallow)

Why this ruling

Peeps are the sugar-coated marshmallow chicks and bunnies sold in the United States at Easter, with other shapes for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day. They are not Halal.

What Just Born says

Just Born, the Pennsylvania company that makes Peeps, answers the question on its own FAQ: "The gelatin used in our marshmallow candies is derived from pork products." The same page says Peeps marshmallow candies are not kosher, and that none of its candies are Halal certified.[2]

What is in them

A pack of yellow Peeps chicks lists sugar, corn syrup and gelatin, then small amounts of colour, potassium sorbate, natural flavors and carnauba wax.[3] The gelatin is what sets the marshmallow, and it is the pork gelatin Just Born describes. Chocolate-dipped Peeps and Peepsters use the same marshmallow.

Why that makes them Haram

Pork gelatin is Haram: the Qur'an forbids the flesh of swine,[1] and Halal certifiers reject the minority view that processing turns pork gelatin into something lawful. With the maker naming pork, there is no Halal version to look for.

Other Just Born candies

Mike and Ike, Hot Tamales and Just Born jelly beans are not marshmallow and list no gelatin; Just Born says they are kosher and pareve and contain confectioner's glaze.[2] They carry no Halal certificate either, so read the pack and decide on the glaze; see shellac.

How to verify

Check labels carefully for alternate names or derivatives linked to peeps, and choose clearly Halal or plant-based alternatives instead.
