Why this ruling
Souvlaki is Greece's and Cyprus's grilled skewer: small cubes of marinated meat grilled over charcoal and served on the stick, on a plate with chips and salad, or wrapped in pita with tomato, onion and tzatziki.[2] In Greece and Cyprus the usual meat is pork. Whether it is Halal depends almost entirely on which meat is on the skewer.[1]

In Greece and Cyprus the default skewer is pork, and chicken skewers are grilled on the same grill.[3] Cypriot grill plates often add sheftalia, sausages usually made with pork; see sheftalia.

Finding Halal souvlaki
In Greece and Cyprus, Halal skewers are most easily found at kebab and grill shops run by Muslim owners, including in northern Cyprus. Outside the region, Greek restaurants usually serve chicken or pork; ask whether the chicken or lamb is Halal.
