Why this ruling
Kinder Bueno is Ferrero's wafer bar: a hazelnut and milk cream filling in a light wafer, coated in milk chocolate. It contains no gelatine, animal fat or alcohol, and the factories that make it hold Halal certificates, but UK wrappers carry no Halal logo.
What is in it
The UK bar lists milk chocolate, sugar, palm oil, wheat flour, hazelnuts, milk powders, fat-reduced cocoa, soya lecithin, raising agent, salt and vanillin.[4] Every item is a plant, mineral or dairy ingredient. Vanillin is a flavour compound, not an animal product.
Kinder Bueno White swaps the milk chocolate for white chocolate and adds whey powder and flavourings.[5] Whey is a by-product of cheese-making, so the rennet used to set the cheese is the one question a strict reader would ask. See whey powder for how scholars treat it.
Who certifies it
South Africa's National Independent Halaal Trust (NIHT) lists two Ferrero factories as certified: Belsk Duży in Poland, certified since 2014, and Stadtallendorf in Germany, certified since 2017. Both certificates run to 28 February 2027.[1][2]
The Gloucester Muslim Welfare Association's Food Guide, which reviews UK products, published Ferrero's list in 2020. It named Kinder Bueno from the German factory and Kinder Bueno and Kinder Bueno White from the Polish factory among the NIHT-certified products.[3] Open Food Facts records the 39 g Bueno White bar as made in Poland.[5]
Why there is no logo on UK packs
The certificate belongs to the factory, and UK wrappers do not print it. If your rule is "only products with a Halal mark on the pack", Kinder Bueno will not pass it in the UK; on ingredients and factory certification, it is Halal. For other Ferrero products, see Ferrero Rocher and Nutella.
How to verify
- Read the ingredients: milk chocolate, wafer, hazelnuts, palm oil, soya lecithin, vanillin. No gelatine.
- Kinder Bueno White adds whey powder and flavourings; the GMWA Food Guide listed it from the NIHT-certified Polish factory.
- UK packs have no Halal logo; the certificates are held by the factories.
- Kinder Bueno ice creams and other Kinder lines are different products: read their own labels.

Scholarly view
The chocolate, wafer and hazelnut filling are plant and dairy ingredients, and vanillin is a flavour compound, so the classic bar raises no source question. Kinder Bueno White adds whey powder, which is made during cheese-making with rennet; scholars differ on rennet from animals not slaughtered Islamically.
A factory Halal certificate covers that question, which is why the GMWA Food Guide relied on NIHT certification for the Polish factory that makes Bueno White.
