How to verify
- Read the list for mono- and diglycerides, monoglyceride or E471.
- If it is there and the box has no Halal mark, its source is not stated.
- US Pocky Matcha lists no E471.
- Glico's statement covers US Pocky; boxes sold elsewhere may differ, so read the one you have.
Quick checks
- Milk is the main animal ingredient.
- E471: source not stated.

Why this ruling
Pocky is Glico's biscuit stick dipped in chocolate or flavoured cream. Its main ingredients are flour, sugar, chocolate, vegetable oils and milk, so one small ingredient decides the Halal answer.
What Glico says
Glico's US FAQ answers the animal question directly: "Pocky sold in the US does not contain any primary ingredient derived from animals except for whole milk powder and lactose."[1] Milk is Halal, so the main ingredients raise no question.
The E471 in most flavours
The US Chocolate box lists mono- and diglycerides,[2] and the Strawberry box lists monoglyceride;[3] both are E471, an emulsifier made from fats. Neither says whether that fat is plant or animal, and the US boxes on Open Food Facts carry no Halal mark. Darul Ifta Birmingham notes that E471 is usually made from soya oil but can be animal-derived, and that where the packaging doesn't state the origin it should be avoided.[5]
The US Matcha box is the exception: its list has no E471, just flour, sugar, palm oil, milk, starch, malt extract and green tea.[4]
Other markets
Glico's answer covers Pocky sold in the US. Pocky bought elsewhere may use a different recipe, so read the list on the box you have and look for a Halal mark.
Where you'll find it

Scholarly view
Nothing in Pocky's main ingredients raises a question: Glico says the only animal-derived ones are milk powder and lactose. The open point is the emulsifier E471. Darul Ifta Birmingham notes that it is usually made from soya oil but can come from animals, and that where the packaging doesn't state the origin it should be avoided. A Halal mark or a maker's statement about the E471 settles it.

Hanafi. E471 is normally made from soya bean oil but also from animal sources; if it is not from an animal source it is Halal, and if its origin is in doubt and not stated on the packaging it should be avoided.
