Chocolate truffles with Marc de Champagne, champagne or rum
not Halal
Why this ruling
Truffle means two different foods. One is a prized underground fungus, shaved over pasta or dried into crisps and oils. The other is a chocolate sweet. They get different answers.
The truffle fungus
Truffles are fungi, and like plants they are lawful: the Qur'an tells people to "eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good".[1] Products made with them are usually simple. M&S black truffle crisps list potatoes, olive oil, rice flour, salt, flavouring, garlic, yeast extract and dried black summer truffle.[3] Heinz truffle mayonnaise adds spirit vinegar and wine vinegar to its 0.4% summer truffle,[4] and wine vinegar is a disputed ingredient.
Chocolate truffles
Chocolate truffles are where alcohol comes in. Charbonnel et Walker's milk Marc de Champagne truffles list Marc de Champagne and white rum,[5] and Waitrose's champagne truffles list Champagne and Marc de Champagne.[6] Darul Iftaa Chicago treats an intoxicant added to food as a direct ingredient as impermissible,[2] so these aren't Halal.
Lindt's Lindor truffles are different: their list has chocolate, vegetable fats, milk powders, soya lecithin, barley malt extract and flavourings, with no alcohol.[7] For Lindt's certification, see Lindt.
Where you'll find it
- Shaved over pasta, risotto and eggs
- Truffle oil, salt, crisps and mayonnaise

Scholarly view
Fungi are lawful like plants, under the Qur'anic command to eat of what is on earth that is lawful and good, so the truffle itself raises no question. Chocolate truffles made with Marc de Champagne, champagne or rum contain alcohol added as an ingredient; Darul Iftaa Chicago treats an intoxicant added to food as a direct ingredient as impermissible. Wine vinegar in truffle mayonnaise is a separate, disputed question.
