How to verify
- The waffle itself is flour, eggs, milk, butter or margarine and sugar.
- For packaged waffles, read the label for the fat and any gelatin.
- Ask about toppings: whipped cream, ice cream, sauces and liqueurs.
Quick checks
- What fat is in the batter or dough?
- What is in the cream, ice cream or sauce on top?
- Ask whether any sauce or cream contains liqueur.

Why this ruling
What the rest of the world calls a Belgian waffle is really two different things in Belgium, and neither contains anything that needs checking in the waffle itself.[2][1]
Brussels and Liège
| Brussels waffle | Liège waffle | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Large, rectangular, deep squares | Smaller, rounded, uneven edges |
| Made from | A thin batter of flour, milk, eggs, butter and yeast or baking powder | A thick brioche-like yeast dough with butter and pearl sugar |
| Texture | Light and crisp | Dense and chewy, with caramelised sugar |
| Usually eaten | With icing sugar, cream or fruit, at a table | Plain, warm, from a street stand |
Flour, eggs, milk, butter, sugar and yeast are all Halal, so a plain waffle of either kind is Halal. Street stands and packaged waffles sometimes use margarine instead of butter, which is also fine. The page stays at "if verified" only because an animal fat other than butter would change it,[3] and because of what goes on top.
The toppings
- Icing sugar, fruit, chocolate sauce and speculoos spread – usually fine. Speculoos spread is biscuits, oil and sugar.
- Whipped cream – fresh whipped cream is just cream. Spray cans and ready-made toppings can contain stabilisers; check for gelatin.
- Ice cream – check the emulsifiers and any gelatin; see ice cream.
- Liqueur, rum or advocaat sauces – not Halal. They are uncommon on waffles but appear on some dessert menus.
Packaged waffles
Supermarket Liège waffles list their ingredients: wheat flour, sugar, butter or vegetable fat, eggs, yeast and flavouring. Look for the fat and for any gelatin in filled or coated versions. A vegetarian mark settles both.
For Belgium's other foods, see the Belgium guide, and for thin pancakes from the same part of Europe, crêpes.
