UK shopping guide
Halal sweets in the UK
Most sweets in UK shops carry no Halal mark, so the answer usually comes from the pack. Here are the four things to check, and where popular brands stand in the UK, each linked to its full evidence.
Four things to check on the pack
- Gelatine. The usual problem in gummies, jellies and marshmallows. Pork gelatine is Haram; gelatine with no named Halal source needs checking. Gelatin: the full ruling
- Carmine (E120, cochineal). A red colour made from insects, used in pink and red sweets. Scholars differ on it. Carmine: the schools' views
- Shellac (E904). A shiny glaze from the lac insect's resin. Listed as Halal by the certifiers cited on its page. Shellac: sources
- Flavourings. "Natural flavouring" does not say where it comes from, or whether alcohol carries it. Natural flavourings: what to ask
A Halal mark from a certifier you trust settles all four for that product. A mark on a pack bought abroad does not cover the UK version.
Brand by brand
The verdict shown is the UK one where the page has a UK section; otherwise it is the page's general verdict. Each page has the sources and its last-reviewed date.
